Since breaking out of a trading range back in October 2013, Alcoa (AA) has been a strong performer gaining over 50%.  With the stock trading around $9.24, Goldman Sachs upgraded AA to Buy with an $11 price target on 11/25/13 and later upped that target to $12 which AA reached in less than 2 months. This action has prompted Goldman Sachs to review AA again and instead of going to a Neutral, they are upping their price target once again this time to $15. We agree with Goldman that it appears AA has more left in the tank but it…

Today’s featured analyst comment is by Goldman Sachs who upgraded Gartner, Inc. (IT) to Buy with an $85 price target.  IT has been on a strong run up over 38% the trailing 12 months and Goldman believes there is more in the tank.  Looking at the chart there is some work needed but we think they may be right. If IT can continue to digest under the recent highs while the MACD continues to recycle then this could lay the ground work for another leg higher.  What we are watching specifically on the stock is the MACD and the 50…

Baxter (BAX)

Baxter Intl (BAX) has not been on an amazing tear this year and is vastly underperforming the S&P 500 wit a mere 9.5% gain YTD vs the broad market’s 20% but Goldman Sachs thinks that is all about to change. Today Goldman Reinstated BAX with a Conviction Buy rating and an $86 price target which using today’s closing price of $71.64 means that Goldman sees a roughly 20% price increase coming in BAX.  Being that it was added to the Conviction Buy rating, as I have noted before, this makes me believe Goldman thinks the gains should be coming sooner…

Priceline (PCLN)

A target or a top for Priceline (PCLN)? Maybe both.  This morning JP Morgan raised their price target on PCLN to $1040 from $830.  JP Morgan expects strong Q2 results and positive gains from the Kayak acquisition.  The firm continues to have an Overweight rating on the stock. Often when we see these larger price target numbers, especially after a big run, it can mark a top in the name as there is no one left to buy.  At least not until there is a dip.  As of the close 8/2, PCLN is up over 46% YTD and might want…

Hasbro (HAS)

Hasbro received an upgrade to Buy today at Needham with a $52 price target after announcing their 2nd Quarter earnings report before the open on 7/22. HAS’ report provided corporate updates like an increase in emerging markets like Brazil, China and Russia.  The company announced an increase in their merchandising relationship with Disney (DIS) and the company is continuing to target $100M in annual savings by 2015. Amongst all those positive events, HAS reported EPS of 29c which was below the 34c consensus estimates and did so on much lower than expected revenue of $766.3M when $794.71M was expected. If…

General Motors (GM)

General Motors (GM) was upgraded today to Conviction Buy at Goldman Sachs.  Some poke fun of the CV designation as they mock it implies GS doesn’t have conviction on their other Buy ratings but I think what GS is trying to do with the designation is denote timeliness.  Something on CV is likely far from its price target and also likely or able, in GS’ mind, to move in that direction relatively quickly.  At least that is my take.  In that same light GS quoted near term catalysts for the reason for the upgrade including the potential for a dividend…

Las Vegas Sands (LVS)

ISI Group upgraded Las Vegas Sands (LVS) to Buy from Neutral.  LVS has rallied back very well over the last few years along with many other names but I like to point to this one as one of those stocks you get an opportunity on when things look most dire. Now ISI is telling you they think it is a Buy.  If I were so inclined to follow their recommendation, I would be watching the 200 Day SMA.  On 6/24/13 LVS gaped down along with the market and violated the 200 day SMA both in intraday action and on a …

Apple (AAPL)

Today Raymond James upgraded Apple (AAPL) to Strong Buy from Outperform and placed a $600 target on the stock.  With AAPL closing Friday at $396.53 this represented a near 51% increase in price and even from today’s closing price of $409.51 leaves a roughly 46.5% gain if RayJay ends up being right. Where I see the opportunity residing is trading again the recent lows, $388.87, which look like they are trying to help carve out a double bottom.  Below there and I will want to re-evaluate and look for a better position.  Target on the upside below RayJay’s target could…
