Daily Wrap

DJIA -23.66 (-0.17%) to 13,511.23; S&P 500 +0.29 (+0.02%) to 1,472.63; NASDAQ +6.76 (+0.22%) to 3,117.54 Again we have another day where the markets were somewhat mixed but overall were overall boring.  Opening roughly 4 points lower the S&P rallied to close slightly positive.  Today we had the Fed Beige Book but obviously there was nothing ground breaking to the markets and now focus will switch to tomorrow’s jobs data.  Last week saw a slight uptick in claims to 371K and this week’s expectation is roughly the same at 369K. Boeing (BA) closed down over 3% today and the news does not look promising.  Following a…

DJIA +27.57 (+0.20%) to 13,534.89; S&P 500 +1.66 (+0.11%) to 1,472.34; NASDAQ -6.72 (-0.22%) to 3,110.78 A gap down in the morning set the lows on the S&P 500 for the day as we then steadily rose the rest of the day making highs near the close.  Overall the data released today was mixed with Retail Sales beating very low expectations, PPI slightly lower than expected and January Empire State Manufacturing better than the previous month but well below expectations.  The Nasdaq was the only major down and with AAPL losing another 2.3% along with the $500’s it is not surprising. Moving higher today to the…

DJIA +18.89 (+0.14%) to 13,507.32; S&P 500 -1.37 (-0.09%) to 1,470.68; NASDAQ -8.14 (-0.26%) to 3,117.50 Technically it was a mixed day but who really cares about the Dow?  Today started and finished lower on the S&P but otherwise was very tight ranged spanning less than 6 points from low to high.  Ben Bernanke spoke just after the close but so far it seems to not have any effect as the futures are up less than 1 point after the close as I am typing. Today’s major stock of the day and has often been my stock of the day…

DJIA +17.21 (+0.13%) to 13,488.43; S&P 500 -0.07 (+0.00%) to 1,472.05; NASDAQ +3.88 (+0.12%) to 3,125.64 Today’s action started with the S&P 500 moving lower but recovering to essentially close flat while the Dow and Nasdaq managed to squeak our small gains.  Not to shabby after just making new 5 year closing highs. In the news today was Best Buy Co.’s (BBY) which didn’t wow people with its same-store sales which were down 1.4% but what did impress and send the stock over 16% higher was the improvement in the US.  The US is a mor focus for the BBY turn around and today’s move took the stock back to where it was for…

DJIA +80.71 (+0.60%) to 13,471.22; S&P 500 +11.10 (+0.76%) to 1,472.12; NASDAQ +15.95 (+0.51%) to 3,121.76 Today’s session started like yesterday’s with early strength that started to wane as the morning went on.  Today differed in that around the 11-11:30 AM EST time we bottomed and then moved higher the remainder of the day.  Before the market opened we got slightly worse than expected jobs numbers but for many traders those were offset by strong export data out of China.    With earnings season still a week away the market looks like it is happy to continue higher. The big stock…

DJIA +61.66 (+0.46%) to 13,390.51; S&P 500 +3.87 (+0.27%) to 1,461.02; NASDAQ +14.00 (+0.45%) to 3,105.81 The highs for today were set in very early trading and then the rest of the day was spent pulling back although never going into negative territory.  I would define today as orderly and we do have Unemployment data tomorrow so I am not surprised to see a quiet day ahead. Apollo Group Inc.’s (APOL) was in the new today and in negative fashion.  After the close yesterday, APOL reported Net Income that were 11% lower than the previous year but still beat on…

DJIA -55.44 (-0.4%) to 13,328.85; SPX -4.74 (-0.3%) to 1,457.15; NASDAQ -7.01 (-0.2%) to 3,091.81 Today’s action was as expected and a continuation of the consolidation.  Early morning trading was only down roughly 2 points in the S&P but by midday we were roughly 10 points lower until finally bottoming and closing the down down 4.  Otherwise there wasn’t much Market news and even the fed minutes showed everything roughly remained the same in voting patterns. In the news today was Signet Jewelers (SIG) which gained over 9% on news that holiday season same-store sales rose 3.3% and also on earnings guidance that Wall Street…

Stocks in the news today included Epocrates (EPOC), up over 21% after agreeing to be acquired by athenahealth (ATHN) for…

The market started the morning somewhat choppy while seemingly digest the morning’s economic data and then started a near uninterrupted climb closing near highs of the day. Supervalu (SVU) gapped higher and closed up over 13.5% on a Wall Street Journal report that private equity firm Cerberus Capital is close…

DJIA -21.19 (-0.16%) to 13,391.36; S&P 500 -3.05 (-0.21%) to 1,459.37; NASDAQ -11.69 (-0.38%) to 3,100.57 I noted last night that after the previous two days that the market should look to consolidate.  Not that it is bearish or due for a massive decline but should consolidate and that is what today was.  We started lower, rallied to up by midday and then closed weak, all the wall essentially hovering right around flat.  The Fed minutes were released providing some excitement but ultimately I didn’t see anything “market moving” but more just some interesting insight for the econ-nerdy.  This type…
