Charts to Watch

Apple (AAPL) found initial resistance at the 200 day SMA which is to be expected on the first touch after so long but I would be watching the consolidation on this one for another trade opportunity.  Also watch the MACD to see if it can recycle. Arch Coal (ACI) pushed nicely into the 50 day SMA today.  This will be key to watch if it can get and stay above.  A move on strong volume might be further evidence that a short term bottom is in and could end up being a much longer term bottom.  I would use the…

Arch Coal (ACI)

Trying to call a bottom in Arch Coal (ACI) has been a fools game but then again I may not be the sharpest knife in the drawer.  For me it is about risk and reward and this one checks that box.  I have a clear pop and flag and can take a long for a bounce against the recent 6/24/13 lows.  Below there and I would be back on the sidelines.  The first touch of the 50 day SMA might be a place to scale out some but if this ends up being a larger bottom then the rally could…

Daily Wrap

DJIA +130.63 (+0.89%) to 14,831.58; S&P 500 +14.89 (+0.94%) to 1,597.59; NASDAQ +37.79 (+1.32%) to 2,911.14 Today was another one of those small gap and run days where the market drifted higher the entire day.  There is not much else to say except it seems as though the market was happy to rally on today’s better than expected Unemployment Claims but the focus will quickly flip to the Non-Farm Employment Change numbers.  I have estimates at 155K and remember last report came in at 88K. In economic news today, Unemployment Claims came in at their lowest levels in over 5 years and well below analysts expectations. …

Daily Wrap

DJIA -81.45 (-0.56%) to 14,537.14; S&P 500 -10.40 (-0.67%) to 1,541.61; NASDAQ -40.03 (-1.44%) to 2,741.95 Today was another strong down day but had more back and forth than previous sessions.  Stocks started the day slightly positive following up on an Unemployment claims number that wasn’t necessarily bullish but also and maybe more importantly wasn’t bearish and came in relatively inline with estimates.  Those early gains gave way and at the lows the S&P 500 cash index was down roughly 16 points.  Overall the action was not like previous sessions and it did feel as though the market is trying to set-up for…

Week in Review

DJIA +48.92 (+0.35%) to 13,992.97; S&P 500 +8.54 (+0.57%) to 1,517.93; NASDAQ +28.74 (+0.91%) to 3,193.87 Today the markets gaped higher and continued higher closing near highs.  We had positive economic data where the U.S. trade deficit shrank to its narrowest level in nearly three years. I felt the story of the day was one that didn’t really seem to be taking over the headlines but I think it might be a decision that eventually we look back at and say this was a big move that many others followed.  That was NJ Governor Chris Christie will allow the state…

Daily Wrap

DJIA +99.22 (+0.71%) to 13,979.30; S&P 500 +15.58 (+1.04%) to 1,511.29; NASDAQ +40.41 (+1.29%) to 3,171.58 I did not expect today to be as strong as it ended up being.  I thought yesterday’s move might be the start of a more prolonged pullback/consolidation that would then give us a new platform to rally from but today’s rally essentially gained back all of yesterday’s losses.  I still do feel this action is part of a topping process but clearly the market’s won’t go without a fight.  Also with this week being a low data week, earnings will likely be a driving…
