Daily Wrap

DJIA +84.79 (+0.63%) to 13,596.02; S&P 500 +8.31 (+0.56%) to 1,480.94; NASDAQ +18.46 (+0.59%) to 3,136.00 Today started with a gap higher and then continued leaving a chart which moved from the lower left to upper right.  The market really started its move after we got a much better than expected Weekly jobless claims number which came in at 335K vs the expected 369K.  The markets did make their high just after 2pm and moved lower into the close and after the close but not destructively so.  The news causing the decline may have been from Dallas Fed hawk Fisher…

Daily Wrap

DJIA -23.66 (-0.17%) to 13,511.23; S&P 500 +0.29 (+0.02%) to 1,472.63; NASDAQ +6.76 (+0.22%) to 3,117.54 Again we have another day where the markets were somewhat mixed but overall were overall boring.  Opening roughly 4 points lower the S&P rallied to close slightly positive.  Today we had the Fed Beige Book but obviously there was nothing ground breaking to the markets and now focus will switch to tomorrow’s jobs data.  Last week saw a slight uptick in claims to 371K and this week’s expectation is roughly the same at 369K. Boeing (BA) closed down over 3% today and the news does not look promising.  Following a…

Week in Review

DJIA +17.21 (+0.13%) to 13,488.43; S&P 500 -0.07 (+0.00%) to 1,472.05; NASDAQ +3.88 (+0.12%) to 3,125.64 Today’s action started with the S&P 500 moving lower but recovering to essentially close flat while the Dow and Nasdaq managed to squeak our small gains.  Not to shabby after just making new 5 year closing highs. In the news today was Best Buy Co.’s (BBY) which didn’t wow people with its same-store sales which were down 1.4% but what did impress and send the stock over 16% higher was the improvement in the US.  The US is a mor focus for the BBY turn around and today’s move took the stock back to where it was for…

Daily Wrap

DJIA -50.92 (-0.38%) to 13,384.29; S&P 500 -4.58 (-0.31%) to 1,461.89; NASDAQ -2.85 (-0.09%) to 3,098.81 The small 60 minute divergence we noted last week played out today with a small gap lower which then meandered most of the day before finally rallying after 2pm EST recovering about half of the day’s losses.   The broad trend still seems to be strongly in-tact and right now it looks like that small divergence might just be setting up for a MACD recycle. Stocks in the news today included Epocrates (EPOC), up over 21% after agreeing to be acquired by athenahealth (ATHN) for…

Week in Review

DJIA  -120.88 (-0.91%) to 13,190.84;  S&P 500 -13.54 (-0.94%) to 1,430.15; NASDAQ -29.38 (-0.96%) to 3021.01; Friday’s action started overnight much much worse than it ended but it was still a big down day.  Main stream media attributed the drop to Boehner’s plan B not only not passing but being pulled even for a vote with the belief there was not enough votes.  While the market closed off the lows seen around noon, it was not resoundingly so and essentially we hovered near the lows all day and closed near the open.  What is interesting and puts some perspective on the days action you will see…

Daily Wrap

DJIA+115.57 (+0.87%) to 13,350.96; S&P 500+16.43 (+1.15%) to 1,446.79; NASDAQ+43.93 (+1.46%) to 3,054.53; Today started with a small move into the 1434 resistance we had noted was above last night but after some quick morning consolidation below, we were off to the races following yesterday’s big gains with another nice day higher today.  Leading the way yesterday was the Financials and while they are not the broad leader again today they followed up nicely on the back of positive comments from Meredith Whitney after yesterday’s close and making the financial talk circuit today.  Specifically she upgraded Bank of America (BAC),…

Daily Wrap

DJIA  +82.71 (+0.64%) to 13,034.49; S&P 500  +2.23 (+0.16%) to 1,409.28; NASDAQ  -22.99 (-0.77%) to 2,973.70; Today’s action was somehow boring and choppy all at the same time.  While we had some moves back and forth it didn’t encompass the entire day and the other times the S&P 500 showed relatively tight action.  More exciting was the Dow and Nasdaq which had moves more that 4 times the S&P although both closed within 1% of the previous day’s close. Weighing on the Nasdaq today was Apple Computers (AAPL).  More trading than news drove today’s action.  I even saw a note…
