Daily Wrap

DJIA -70.73 (-0.47%) to 15,010.74;S&P 500 -9.77 (-0.59%) to 1,646.06;NASDAQ -13.69 (-0.38%) to 3,589.09 The S&P 500 started today with a gap lower but quickly rallied to not only retake the early losses but move into positive territory for the day.  Then around 10:30 am EST the market started to roll and spent the remainder of the day under pressure and ultimately ended up closing below the 50 day SMA. No economic data to report and this is a light econ data week, at least for the US. Apple (AAPL) was able to buck the broad market’s downward trend and close slightly higher…

Daily Wrap

DJIA +138.46 (+0.92%) to 15,254.03;S&P 500 +9.68 (+0.59%) to 1,640.42;NASDAQ +9.03 (+0.30%) to 2,990.79 The S&P 500 started the morning higher but spent the majority of the midday in negative territory before turning positive around 2pm EST and rallying into the close.  The Nasdaq had roughly the same pattern but the Dow was able to remain positive the entire day due to the strong moves by Merck (MRK) and also Intel (INTC).  In economic news, ISM came in light with a 49 reading which was below estimates and also the lowest reading in roughly 4 years. The aforementioned MRK was up today on positive news regarding…

Daily Wrap

DJIA -19.12 (-0.12%) to 15,335.28; S&P 500 -1.18 (-0.07%) to 1,666.29; NASDAQ -7.99 (-0.26%) to 3,020.97 Today the market somewhat consolidated after its ramp into options expiration last Friday.  Initially it looked as though it could be another strong move higher as early trading was choppy but then we spiked higher into the noon EST time.  That spike was eventually lost and we ultimately close near flat on the day.  It was interesting to see the Russell 2000 be the strongest index and only one to close higher.  Small caps leading might bode well for ultimately higher prices.  Tomorrow is Tuesday and interestingly…

Daily Wrap

DJIA +21.05 (+0.14%) to 14,839.80; S&P 500 +3.96 (+0.25%) to 1,597.57; NASDAQ +20.49 (+0.71%) to 2,887.44 Today saw some jockeying for position by the indices as they started the day moving lower and then recovered to close slightly up for the session.  In economic news the Case/Shiller index rose 1.2% from the previous month’s reading and topped estimates with a 9.3% vs 9.1% estimate.  Chicago PMI on the other hand fell short of estimates recording a 49 vs 52.5 estimate.  Consumer confidence came in mainly inline with a 68.1 vs 68.4 estimate. Before the open, Pfizer (PFE) reported earnings which missed on both revenues ($13.5B vs $14B) and EPS (54c…

Week in Review

DJIA -40.86 (-0.28%) to 14,565.25; S&P 500 -6.70 (-0.43%) to 1,553.28; NASDAQ -21.12 (-0.65%) to 3,203.86 The March unemployment data came in well below expectations (88K vs 198K expectations) which send the market gaping lower and down over 1% in early trading.  This took the S&P 500 toward the 50 day SMA and into a range of support which is used to rally off the lows ultimately only closing down slightly for the day. Big loser on the day was F5 Networks (FFIV) which lose over 19% after announcing Q2 earnings that were below analyst expectations.  The company blamed the lower results on decreasing telecom and…

Daily Wrap

DJIA +55.76 (+0.38%) to 14,606.11; S&P 500 +6.29 (+0.40%) to 1,559.98; NASDAQ +6.38 (+0.20%) to 3,224.98 Today a surprise in Jobs data yet again gave the market something to think about, namely a potential spring time soft patch.  What it feels like we are in is a economic consolidation. I noted last night that some late day small positive divergence could help us higher overnight and/or in early trading.  We got that move higher in early trading but the poor Jobs data seemed to weight on the S&P 500 taking it and the Dow lower and even negative around noon only to finally…

DJIA +17.21 (+0.13%) to 13,488.43; S&P 500 -0.07 (+0.00%) to 1,472.05; NASDAQ +3.88 (+0.12%) to 3,125.64 Today’s action started with the S&P 500 moving lower but recovering to essentially close flat while the Dow and Nasdaq managed to squeak our small gains.  Not to shabby after just making new 5 year closing highs. In the news today was Best Buy Co.’s (BBY) which didn’t wow people with its same-store sales which were down 1.4% but what did impress and send the stock over 16% higher was the improvement in the US.  The US is a mor focus for the BBY turn around and today’s move took the stock back to where it was for…

Week in Review

DJIA  -35.71 (-0.27%) to 13,135.01;  S&P 500  -5.87 (-0.41%) to 1,413.58; NASDAQ  -20.83 (-0.70%) to 2,971.33; Friday’s action was red across the board and it was never in doubt.  The downside was lead by the tech and inside tech the leader down was Apple Computers (AAPL) and names inside the AAPL universe.  We had a small amount of economic data today but nothing that would have been able to or did change the course.  The bias was clearly to go home today flat or short but not long as we saw the selling pick up after 2pm as traders have…

Daily Wrap

DJIA  –74.73 (-0.56%) to 13,170.72;  S&P 500 -9.03 (-0.63%) to 1,419.45;  NASDAQ -21.65 (-0.72%) to 2,992.16; Today starting mixed with the markets bouncing from slightly negative to positive and back but around 11 am EST the S&P 500 turned lowered and continued to drift the remainder of the day finally closing down just over 9 points and filling the gap from 12/10/12.  We did have economic data that was better than forecasts (including a 343K Jobless Claims number) but I think it wasn’t so strong that it alone could push the market higher. The stock of today in my opinion…

Week in Review

DJIA +172.79 (+1.35%) to 13,009.68 S&P 500 +18.12 (+1.30%) to 1,409.15 NASDAQ +40.30 (+1.38%) to 2,966.85 This has been the standard holiday trading that we have been highlighting.  Lower volumes and a drift higher.  The recent lows have provided a nice trade and today was more than just an up day with the S&P gapping higher and continuing all, albeit a half, day.  It is very difficult to get bearish during a week like this and in the face of moves like this and rightfully so but today, as we were noting on Stock Twits (WSConsensus), is the kind of day you want to be…
