Market dips early but fights back

Index & Sector performance 1/21/14 The Market: This is the type of market that frustrates both the Bull & the Bears.  Strong moves in each direction serve to whip weak traders our of their positions.  After a very light futures trading session Monday with the Stock Market closed, the S&P 500 futures pressed higher in late Monday/early Tuesday trading.  Just before the open the futures printed $1844 and then started to sell off right at the open.  The market finally found a bottom near noon EST but only after losing roughly 18 points from the pre-market highs.  The S&P 500…

China fears helped send market lower

Index & Sector performance 10/23/13 The Market: Today was a gap own and meander day where the majority f the losses were seen in very early trading and the rest of the day was mostly choppy. News attributed the drop to tightening fears out of China which sent international markets lower but as we have discussed here the market seemed ripe for a pullback.  More lower.. In economic data there was not too much today with import prices coming in roughly as expected while the Home Price Index was well below expectations (0.3% vs 0.8%) .  Yesterday we had the…

All quiet before jobs data

Index & Sector performance 10/21/13 The Market: Not too much to report as it was a quiet down day in the S&P 500 and Dow with the Nasdaq making small gains much on the back of a strong performance from Apple (AAPL) closing up nearly 2.5% on the day. In economic news we had Existing Home Sales with came in light posting a 5.29M when 5.31M was expected.  Tomorrow will be a much bigger day as we get the jobs report that was delayed due to the government shutdown.  Current forecast is for 182K and Unemployment rate of 7.3% Story…

DJIA -36.86 (-0.24%) to 15,521.97;S&P 500 -6.32 (-0.37%) to 1,685.33;NASDAQ -14.02 (-0.39%) to 3,599.14 Today the S&P 500 started with a small gap down that initially tried to rally back to Friday’s close but couldn’t hold and slipped lower until finding a bottom just before noon EST.  After gaining some traction the S&P rallied until roughly 2:30 EST before falling again in the last hour of trading but did not make new lows for the day. There was a notable merger in today’s news and while the stocks didn’t move very much, due to the size of the companies it was note worthy…

DJIA +11.75 (+0.08%) to 14,712.55; S&P 500 -2.92 (-0.18%) to 1,582.24; NASDAQ -8.11 (-0.28%) to 2,840.55 With the exception of the Dow, the markets were on the downside Friday but only slightly so on what was a relatively uneventful options expiration.  All in all I would call today another consolidation day.  The S&P 500 started relatively flat and then moved lower until noon EST where it set a bottom and rallied the remainder of the day including a quick peak into positive territory just before the close which was eventually sold leave the small loss on the day.  In economic news we saw real GDP growth…

DJIA +152.29 (+1.05%) to 14,719.46; S&P 500 +16.28 (+1.04%) to 1,578.78; NASDAQ +25.30 (+0.90%) to 2,835.37 Very strong day today in the market today with all major indices moving up roughly 1% or higher.  Today started with a gap higher and steadily climbed all day until 1pm EST when we saw a spike down.  We later realized the spike was caused by a false report by the AP, after their Twitter feed was hacked, that two bombs went off at the White House injuring the President.  Once the market realized the error they snapped back (whole process took a few minutes) but then still…

Daily Wrap

DJIA +19.66 (+0.14%) to 14,567.17; S&P 500 +7.25 (+0.47%) to 1,562.50; NASDAQ +29.61 (+1.06%) to 2,810.07 Monday’s action started with a gap higher which was promptly sold until just before 11am EST when the S&P 500 finally bottomed and then rallied the majority of the day.  The high for the day was set just before 3pm EST and the remainder of the day was spent consolidating with a slightly lower bias.  In economic data we saw a slightly downbeat housing (existing sales) number coming in at 4.92M vs a 5.02M estimate. Caterpillar (CAT) announced earnings that seemed to be overall disappointing with a…

DJIA +70.65 (+0.51%) to 13,895.98; S&P 500 +8.14 (+0.54%) to 1,502.96; NASDAQ +19.33 (+0.62%) to 3,149.71 Leading the major indexes higher today was the Nasdaq, even with AAPL being down over 2%.  There was not a great deal of economic news but New Home sales for came in lower than expected but the previous month was adjusted well higher.  At this point the market seems to be unshaken and seems to be saying that it is going higher until something substantive unseats it.  At the same time, Art Hogan, market strategist at Lazard Capital Markets pointed out that we are up…

Daily Wrap

DJIA +67.12 (+0.49%) to 13,779.33; S&P 500 +2.25 (+0.15%) to 1,494.81; NASDAQ +10.49 (+0.33%) to 3,153.67 All in all today was a nothing as we started around flat and stayed flat the majority of the day until we (again) rallied into the close after lunch.  After the close we had Apple Computers (AAPL) report earnings which slightly beat EPS estimates but slightly missed on revenues.  The futures dropped at the same time as AAPL reported and started to decline and now stand down about 7 points as I write. Apple (AAPL) clearly is driving discussion after the close and it…

Daily Wrap

DJIA +62.51 (+0.46%) to 13,712.21; S&P 500 +6.58 (+0.44%) to 1,492.56; NASDAQ +8.47 (+0.27%) to 3,143.18 Today was an interesting day.  4 Dow names reported before the bell but due t their mixed nature it didn’t seem to help provide any conviction either way so the market erred on the being down side.  After wavering for the early part of the day the S&P finally pressed into positive territory around lunch and then started a trek higher closing up over 6 points for the day.  In economic news, US existing home sales came in below estimates for December and the Richmond Fed Manufacturing survey looked to…
