Daily Wrap

DJIA -90.24 (-0.62%) to 14,421.49; S&P 500 -12.91 (-0.83%) to 1,545.80; NASDAQ -31.59 (-0.97%) to 3,222.60 Europe ruled the day and after a small initial gap lower and midday rally, the markets then lost ground the remainder of the day sending it back down near Tuesday’s lows.  In economic data news we saw the U.S. jobless claims slightly rose but were less than expectations.  The data wasn’t enough to really push the markets one way or another and it was back to Europe and underperforming Tech stocks. Most notable tech underperformer was Oracle (ORCL) which closed nearly 10% lower after missing EPS estimates…

Daily Wrap

DJIA +83.86 (+0.58%) to 14,539.14; S&P 500 +8.71 (+0.56%) to 1,563.23; NASDAQ +13.81 (+0.43%) to 3,258.93 Nothing much happened today, another day another Dow high, you know, the usual.  Today at the close actually would not have been a bad spot to try and take a small short as a spec trade into tomorrow.  Nothing big, nothing saying a top is in but just 10 straight days up in the Dow is somewhat extended. Economic data today included U.S. jobless claims which came in lower than expected at 332K. Stock of the day today was E-Trade Financial (ETFC) which lost over 8% after…

DJIA +125.95 (+0.89%) to 14,253.77; S&P 500 +14.59 (+0.96%) to 1,539.79; NASDAQ +42.10 (+1.32%) to 3,224.13 Up up and away the market went today with the Dow closing at record highs.  Starting the week I had the expectation that this week would be a consolidation week but then as Monday started, something bothered me.  The 4 hour emini S&P 500 chart.  It didn’t just look bullish it look destined to head higher.  I posted it over at StockTwits (WSConsensus) and again in my nightly recap.  The way the markets closed and also started the next day seemed to be confirming the pattern and…

Week in Review

DJIA +8.37 (+0.06%) to 13,981.76; S&P 500 -1.59 (-0.10%) to 1,519.79; NASDAQ -6.63 (-0.21%) to 3,192.03 A pretty lack luster Friday to close off a lack luster week.  There wasn’t a shortage of events and things the market could use to drive direction one way or the other but it simply chose not to.  The market seems firmly pitted between valuations that may seem somewhat extended and technicals that would like a pullback but the continued accommodating environment from the Fed and also the Government as they continue to run deficits and even if cutting it is slow to not shock the economy.  How the market…

Daily Wrap

DJIA -9.52 (-0.07%) to 13,973.39; S&P 500 +1.05 (+0.07%) to 1,521.38; NASDAQ +1.78 (+0.06%) to 3,198.66 The market has been flexing its muscle and trying to show many different things.  If your a basketball fan you might say the market is trying to show it can take you to the hole and also hit the step back jumped.  The market faced another down move today and ultimately looking back at the chart the first 5 minute bar of the day market the lows.  The market continued a steady climb higher and likely used the Unemployment claims, which came in better than expected (341K vs 361K…

Daily Wrap

Today was an ugly day for the markets.  We had highlighted, for the Bulls, a potential inverse H&S setting up on the 60 minute SPY chart but noted that the lows from 11/13/12 HAD to hold or the market could be looking at a bad situation.  The SPY made the highs for the day in the first 5 minutes of trading and then faced selling for the remainder.  The first leg down completed around 11am EST and then we meandered until later until around 2:15 pm EST when we broke hard for the rest of the day.  The President spoke…
