The NightCap

The Market: A late day rally helped the market close well off the midday lows but all 4 major indices on the WSC Scorobard still finished down near or over 1%.  Based on the recent action, we expect to see lower levels in the short-term. In individual sectors, Retail (XRT) was the hardest hit sector on the WSC Scorboard with Priceline (PCLN) finishing down over 9% on the session after reporting EPS which beat expectations but guidance that fell short.  We will be watching Ctrip.com (CTRP) which is scheduled to report EPS tomorrow, November 10th, after the close — CTRP…

Next target the 50 day SMA?

Index & Sector performance 3/13/14 The Market: A strong down day in the market but coming into the day people may have thought that would be a result of a poor Unemployment Claims number but we actually saw a better than expected 315K (334K est).  After the report the index meandered higher into the open and then after peaking out above trend line resistance, turned and started what proved to be a day long decline. At 11:30 am we posted on StockTwits that the decline in the ES looked like it had lower to go especially due to the slope…

Week in Review

DJIA +11.75 (+0.08%) to 14,712.55; S&P 500 -2.92 (-0.18%) to 1,582.24; NASDAQ -8.11 (-0.28%) to 2,840.55 With the exception of the Dow, the markets were on the downside Friday but only slightly so on what was a relatively uneventful options expiration.  All in all I would call today another consolidation day.  The S&P 500 started relatively flat and then moved lower until noon EST where it set a bottom and rallied the remainder of the day including a quick peak into positive territory just before the close which was eventually sold leave the small loss on the day.  In economic news we saw real GDP growth…

Daily Wrap

DJIA +152.29 (+1.05%) to 14,719.46; S&P 500 +16.28 (+1.04%) to 1,578.78; NASDAQ +25.30 (+0.90%) to 2,835.37 Very strong day today in the market today with all major indices moving up roughly 1% or higher.  Today started with a gap higher and steadily climbed all day until 1pm EST when we saw a spike down.  We later realized the spike was caused by a false report by the AP, after their Twitter feed was hacked, that two bombs went off at the White House injuring the President.  Once the market realized the error they snapped back (whole process took a few minutes) but then still…

Week in Review

DJIA +48.92 (+0.35%) to 13,992.97; S&P 500 +8.54 (+0.57%) to 1,517.93; NASDAQ +28.74 (+0.91%) to 3,193.87 Today the markets gaped higher and continued higher closing near highs.  We had positive economic data where the U.S. trade deficit shrank to its narrowest level in nearly three years. I felt the story of the day was one that didn’t really seem to be taking over the headlines but I think it might be a decision that eventually we look back at and say this was a big move that many others followed.  That was NJ Governor Chris Christie will allow the state…

Daily Wrap

DJIA -129.71 (-0.93%) to 13,880.08; S&P 500 -17.46 (-1.15%) to 1,495.71; NASDAQ -47.93 (-1.51%) to 3,131.17 Today proved to be a very timely pullback as we noted last last week and then this weekend after Friday’s action that we believed a form of a top was in that would provide a longer pullback/consolidation than we have been seeing of late.  Today essentially wiped out all of last week gains and it is not surprising after such a strong move down to see the markets up slightly after the close.  We will have to see if they can hold or build…
