Down but much better than the start
Index & Sector performance 9/29/14 The Market: All 4 broad market indices closed lower however all also closed well off their lows of the session. The standout sector in today’s trading is clearly the Utilities (XLU) which finished up 0.65% and is currently in 4th place amongst the WSC Scoreboard sectors for largest YTD gain. The biggest laggard was Consumer Discretionary (XLY) followed by Materials (XLB). In Economic data, Pending Home Sales was a big disappointment coming in at -1% when -0.4% was expected while last months reading was adjusted slightly lower to 3.2% from 3.3%. Reporting EPS…
SPY is sitting on the 50 day SMA
Index & Sector performance 9/23/14 The Market: U.S. led airstrikes in Syria and weaker than expected European manufacturing data helped continued weakness in the broad markets with the Russell 2000 (IWM) again leading the way to the downside. After peaking back positive YTD in late August and into early this month, the IWM is now down 3.46%. The NASDAQ (QQQ) was the clear winner, on a relative basis, and was helped by a strong showing in Apple (AAPL) which closed up 1.56%. The S&P 500 (SPY) is now near, essentially at, its 50 day SMA and we are very interested…
China growth concerns weigh on market
Index & Sector performance 9/22/14 The Market: The markets started the week off lower with many pointing to weak economic data out of China as well as comments from the Chinese finance minister stating there will be no major policy adjustments as the cause. Leading the way lower was the Russell 2000 (IWM) which remains the clear underperfomer for the year with the Dow (DIA) not too far behind but at least positive YTD. Multiple sectors closed the day down over 1% with Retail (XRT) leading the way finishing the session 1.59% lower. The XRT is now again over 1%…
Indices build on week’s gains
Index & Sector performance 8/14/14 The Market: A good up day as all 4 broad indices on the WSC Scoreboard finished the day higher and the Russell 2000 (IWM) is now only X% down on the year. The concern with this week’s bounce has been and remains to be the declining volume as we continue higher. However, until the market turns lower and begins taking out support, traders must respect the price action. In individual sectors, leading was HealthCare (XLV) which finished the day up 1.18% continuing to build on the strong week followed closely by yesterday’s laggard, Retail (XRT) which…
Markets stop slide, fight back
Index & Sector performance 8/4/14 The Market: After two strong down days, all 4 indices on the WSC Scoreboard managed to find bottoms and rally with the Russell 2000 (IWM) leading the charge finishing the day 0.89% higher. One note of caution, volume was on the light side when compared to the previous two sessions. Our suggestion would be to watch the first major pullback after today’s move. If it is orderly then the market likely has unfinished business to the upside, otherwise we will likely see another push lower. In individual sectors it was green across the board except…
S&P takes back overnight losses plus
Index & Sector performance 5/5/14 The Market: The S&P futures moved lower in the Sunday overnight session attributed to weak economic data out of China as well continued unrest in Ukraine. The futures continued lower throughout early trading Monday but found a bottom right at the open on an initial spike lower to 1860.50ES which was quickly bought and the index started a march higher reaching 1880ES by 2:30 pm ET. The index spent the last hour consolidating the near 20 point intraday rally. If 1872ES holds in overnight trading it appears the index could look to make a move…
Window dressing or more to come?
Index & Sector performance 3/31/14 The Market: The Quarter ends with a nice up session which has some throwing around the term “window dressing”. While we do not necessarily disagree with the sentiment, we also believe price is the ultimate indicator and therefore today’s action has to be respected. Otherwise it is ultimately a continuation of the short term consolidation between the highs on the S&P 500 cash at $1883.97 and the 3/14/14 lows of $1839.57. In the very short term the futures appear to be flagging overnight and could look to next target the 1875ES region. Support is 1862ES…
Early pop leads to late day drop
Index & Sector performance 3/11/14 The Market: The market rallied pre-market into the open, pulled back and went again but was unable to break through a pivot confluence resistance area. The pullback into the noon EST period started to consolidate but the MACD was telling that more downside was likely. As we reached the 2-2:30 pm EST time frame the S&P again started to weaken and broke to fresh lows for the day. We will be watching for $1860ES and then further $1850ES for support levels. On the S&P500 cash index the 20 day SMA comes in around $1853. In…
