Earnings should take center stage

The Market: Not much movement in today’s action as we saw a drop in volume across all the major Indices.  The overnight session saw futures move lower which seemed primarily due to some exhaustion in the markets but not helping was China’s GDP numbers which met expectations but slowed compared to the prior quarter.  With this being a light Economic Data week, we expect focus to be on individual stocks as they report earnings.  Below is a list of names that reported tonight after the close and that will report tomorrow with even more listed in the Events Calendar. In…

Eurozone helps U.S. go green YTD

Index & Sector performance 1/8/15 The Market: The Dow (DIA), S&P 500 (SPY) and Nasdaq (QQQ) are all green for the year as of today’s close with the Russell 2000 (IWM) lagging down 0.8%.  Considering there have only been about 5 trading days in the new year, this is not saying much but the recent 2 day recovery is impressive and reminiscent of what we saw all 2013 and 2014. Helping the U.S. market today was statements from Mario Draghi that the ECB will discuss adding more or new monetary stimulus at their next rate meeting in two weeks.  This…

Revisiting December’s lows

Index & Sector performance 1/6/15 The Market: Oil appears to still be affecting the broad market and causing caution in investors as crude, which lost the psychological $50 level yesterday, traded down over $2 in today’s session. Yesterday we remarked that a gap down in the morning could be a short term trading opportunity to the long side but unfortunately we opened flat to slightly up, negative the set-up, and then continue to crawl higher in the first hour of trading before the indices began to sharply lose ground.  Today’s sharp drop eventually found support at the mid-December trading lows…

Farewell QE3

Index & Sector performance 10/29/14 The Market: It was a relatively quiet session the majority of the day as traders were awaiting the 2pm FOMC rate decisions and statement.  As was expected, the Fed ended QE3 but continued to note that rates would remain low for a “considerable period”.  The initial reaction after the release was a move lower but the market had already been trending that way since the open and, after the initial drop, buyers stepped in and ultimately the indices closed only slightly lower. It was a mixed session across the WSC Scoreboard sectors with Materials (XLB)…

Icahn comments spark late day sell off

Index & Sector performance 11/18/13 The Market: It was a fairly quiet day in the markets until a comment from Carl Icahn appears to have started a late day sell off after noting that he could see the markets have a “big drop”.  This sent the S&P 500 down roughly 12 points in the final hour of trading In economic date the NAHB Housing Market Index fell slightly short of estimates posting a 54 when 56 was expected.  Today also some a mix of Fed speak and that continues tomorrow including Fed Chairman Bernanke at 7pm EST and President Obama…

Daily Wrap

DJIA -111.66 (-0.76%) to 14,550.35; S&P 500 -16.56 (-1.05%) to 1,553.69; NASDAQ -36.26 (-1.11%) to 3,218.60 Today in the pre-market we were essentially flat/slight higher and even after a poor ADP number the S&P 500 was able to open slightly higher but that was short lived and the rest of the day we saw market declines which at the lows approached down 20 points in the S&P 500 or over 1%.  Along with the weak ADP and general concerns on slower global growth we also had two other event weighing on the markets.  First the U.S. Defense Secretary, Chuck Hagel, stated that the…

Daily Wrap

DJIA -55.44 (-0.4%) to 13,328.85; SPX -4.74 (-0.3%) to 1,457.15; NASDAQ -7.01 (-0.2%) to 3,091.81 Today’s action was as expected and a continuation of the consolidation.  Early morning trading was only down roughly 2 points in the S&P but by midday we were roughly 10 points lower until finally bottoming and closing the down down 4.  Otherwise there wasn’t much Market news and even the fed minutes showed everything roughly remained the same in voting patterns. In the news today was Signet Jewelers (SIG) which gained over 9% on news that holiday season same-store sales rose 3.3% and also on earnings guidance that Wall Street…
