Early Gains quickly fade

Index & Sector performance 1/06/14 The Market: Pre-market optimism was met with early selling which took the S&P 500 from $137 on the open own to $1824 by midday.  The market bounced along crafting a bottom until roughly 2pm EST when the S&P managed to rally off the lows.  While it never made it back to the morning high, the S&P managed to rally back toward even on the day but then sold off in the last hour closing near the lows of the day. In economic news we saw Factory Orders and Services PMI come in as expected while…

AA kicks off a new earnings season…tomorrow

Index & Sector performance 10/07/13 The Market: The markets started down strong but found early support and rallied into midday but couldn’t hold and press toward Friday’s close and instead sold off during the last hour of trading closing near the early morning slows but just slightly above. Hard to believe we are kicking off another earnings season but Alcoa (AA) will start tings off again Wednesday 10/8/13 after the close.  While AA no longer has the significance it once did, it still is known for ushering in the season and many larger more impactful names will then be reporting….

Daily Wrap

DJIA +207.50 (+1.38%) to 15,248.12;S&P 500 +207.50 (+1.38%) to 1,643.38;NASDAQ +40.57 (+1.38%) to 2,990.87 Today the markets followed up on yesterday’s moves off the lows with a very impressive strong rally after a jobs number that many touted as “in the sweet spot”.  Meaning that it was not strong enough to force the Fed to revisit their efforts but better than estimates showing an improvement in the employment picture.  While the Jobs number slightly beat estimates, the Unemployment rate ticked up unexpectedly to 7.6% due to more people entering the workforce than expected.  These are presumably people who were previously discouraged workers so if they feel…

Daily Wrap

DJIA +60.44 (+0.40%) to 15,275.69; S&P 500 +8.44 (+0.51%) to 1,658.78; NASDAQ +6.57 (+0.22%) to 3,002.62 A very choppy yet still strong day to follow-up on Tuesday’s rip higher.  Today initially open lowered but by 11am EST was back to flat and then took off at what felt like an unabated rally which fell just shy of $1660 in the S&P 500 cash index.  The market then swooned almost back to even and finally finished up 8 points and only roughly 3 from the high.  There was a decent amount of economic data today and it was interestingly mixed but what will be watched for the…

Week in Review

DJIA -40.86 (-0.28%) to 14,565.25; S&P 500 -6.70 (-0.43%) to 1,553.28; NASDAQ -21.12 (-0.65%) to 3,203.86 The March unemployment data came in well below expectations (88K vs 198K expectations) which send the market gaping lower and down over 1% in early trading.  This took the S&P 500 toward the 50 day SMA and into a range of support which is used to rally off the lows ultimately only closing down slightly for the day. Big loser on the day was F5 Networks (FFIV) which lose over 19% after announcing Q2 earnings that were below analyst expectations.  The company blamed the lower results on decreasing telecom and…

Daily Wrap

DJIA +55.76 (+0.38%) to 14,606.11; S&P 500 +6.29 (+0.40%) to 1,559.98; NASDAQ +6.38 (+0.20%) to 3,224.98 Today a surprise in Jobs data yet again gave the market something to think about, namely a potential spring time soft patch.  What it feels like we are in is a economic consolidation. I noted last night that some late day small positive divergence could help us higher overnight and/or in early trading.  We got that move higher in early trading but the poor Jobs data seemed to weight on the S&P 500 taking it and the Dow lower and even negative around noon only to finally…

Daily Wrap

DJIA -5.69 (-0.04%) to 14,572.85; S&P 500 -7.02 (-0.45%) to 1,562.17; NASDAQ -28.35 (-0.87%) to 3,239.17 Today started with a small move higher in the morning as the 2nd quarter got its start but that optimism soon waned and after a weak ISM number we saw a quick swoon lower in the broad markets with the small caps and techs leading the way lower.  I think today’s action had more to do with the upward bias into the holiday and quarter end finally being over than with the ISM number itself but as much as this market has rallied and I noted over…

Daily Wrap

DJIA -9.52 (-0.07%) to 13,973.39; S&P 500 +1.05 (+0.07%) to 1,521.38; NASDAQ +1.78 (+0.06%) to 3,198.66 The market has been flexing its muscle and trying to show many different things.  If your a basketball fan you might say the market is trying to show it can take you to the hole and also hit the step back jumped.  The market faced another down move today and ultimately looking back at the chart the first 5 minute bar of the day market the lows.  The market continued a steady climb higher and likely used the Unemployment claims, which came in better than expected (341K vs 361K…

Daily Wrap

DJIA -21.73 (-0.16%) to 13,971.24; S&P 500 -0.92 (-0.06%) to 1,517.01; NASDAQ -1.87 (-0.06%) to 3,192.00 Today’s market held in a tight range and is reflected in the close in the S&P 500 which is down less than 1point.  This week has a fair amount of data, fed speak and some scheduled Obama talk.  I try and log it all and then update the numbers as they come out so visit the Event’s Calendar for the updates and there is also currently a dividends and splits list. The stock of the day today was Nordisk (NVO) which received an FDA Complete Response Letter indicating that the company’s insulin products will…
