Market continues to grind

Index & Sector performance 2/19/15 The Market: The slow grind into options expiration continues with the S&P 500 (SPY) and Dow (DIA) finishing slightly lower while the Russell 2000 (IWM) finished slightly higher and the NASDAQ (QQQ) led.  We would expect to potentially see volatility tomorrow not only due to options expiration but also potential headline risk out of Europe. Overall a mixed session as yesterday’s sector leader to the upside, the Utilities (XLU), was today’s downside leader finishing 1/13% lower while Technology (XLK) followed closely by Consumer Discretionary (XLY) led to the upside. Daily Wrap

The markets started today with another gap down and twice tried to rally and failed.  he first rally started roughly around noon and continued until the Fed minutes were announced which then sent the S&P tumbling quickly to new lows for the day but that dip was bought and in a volatile hour was not only higher but positive on the day.  As soon as the gains were had they were lost and the final hour of trading again sent shares lower closing above but near the lows of the day. DJIA -26.81 (-0.18%) to 15,091.68; S&P 500 +0.07 (+0.00%) to 1,633.77; NASDAQ +1.07 (+0.04%) to 2,982.09 Today was more active than the change on the day and even the Daily chart might show as early trading started with a small gap down and then a strong move lower until 10am EST when the S&P 500 finally bottomed and then rallied roughly 10 points to noon est where it spend the remainder of the day consolidating closing a few points off the day’s highs.
