Holiday trading continued

Index & Sector performance 12/29/14 The Market: Today’s session was a continuation of the previous week’s holiday trading and will likely continue this way for the rest of the week with Thursday being closed for New Year’s Day.  The Russell 2000 (IWM) led while the NASDAQ (QQQ) and Dow (DIA) finished slightly lower. The leading individual sectors were the Utilities (XLU) and Retail (XRT) finishing up 1.15% and 0.98% respectively.  As might be expected with the QQQ finishing lower, Technology (XLK) lagged followed by Consumer Staples (XLP). There were no scheduled Economic Events today but there is some noteworthy data…

AAPL helps drive late day sell off

Index & Sector performance 9/9/14 The Market: All major indices on the WSC Scoreboard finished the session lower with the Russell 2000 (IWM) leading the charge down 1.18%.  The S&P 500 (SPY) started the session weak but found a bottom in early trading and then managed to rally until 2pm ET when the index turned and sold off making new lows for the session.   The NASDAQ (QQQ) held in well during early trading as traders were likely waiting for the Apple (AAPL) product announcement.  The initial reaction to AAPL’s news (new/bigger phones, watch, payment system) was positive and the…

Ceasefire helps stocks higher

Index & Sector performance 8/18/14 The Market: Strong strong session with the Dow (DIA) and Russell 2000 (IWM) closing up over 1% while the S&P 500 (SPY) and NASDAQ (QQQ) were not too far behind.  It appears the markets were able to build on Friday’s late day move off the lows being helped by optimism of a Ukraine-Russia ceasefire.  The IWM, which has spent the majority of the year in the red, is not only down 0.23% on the year. Multiple sectors posted strong performances including the Transportation (IYT), Retail (XRT), Industrials (XLI), and Financials (XLF) all up over 1%…

Early momentum fades

Index & Sector performance 8/11/14 The Market: Stocks started off the day building on Friday’s gains but near midday the S&P 500 topped out and then spent the rest of the day moving lower.  All 4 indices on the WSC Scoreboard finished the day higher but the NASDAQ (QQQ) and Russell 2000 (IWM) were the clear winners with the IWM gaining nearly 1%. The leading sector on the day was the Consumer Staples (XLP) but the stock in the index that stood out the most was to the downside and that is Dean Foods (DF).  DF finished the day down…

Market starts on Tryptophan

Index & Sector performance 12/2/13 The Market: Overall not a very active day in this first full trading session after the Thanksgiving holiday and to start December.      Today’s action started with an early dip that was quickly bought and started to rally higher until 12:30 pm EST.  That is where the rally lost steam and started a descent back down toward the earlier lows.  The market reached and went through those lows finally closing at $1800 in the S&P 500.  It is unclear if this slow start to the month is about to start a slide or if it is…
