Retail sales beat, Unemployment drags

Index & Sector performance 12/12/13 The Market: The market continued picked up where it left losing more ground but not as dramatic as the 1% down yesterday.  The majority of the losses where in the beginning part of the day with the market making the lows for the day around 12:30 pm EST and starting to rally.  That rally halted around 3pm EST and the market used the last hour to sell off not quite making it back to the midday lows. In economic data, Retail Sales number beat expectations and with Core Sales doubling expectations posting a 0.4% and…

ECB moved & so did the markets

Index & Sector performance 11/7/13 The Market: The S&P 500 spiked higher around 8am EST time after the ECB announced a rate cut.  This move was further helped by a strong Q3 GDP number.  While we opened off the pre-market highs, the real selling began after the bells.  After each move lower the market tried to stage a rally but all were sold.  The S&P 500 closed right at the 20 day SMA  From peak to trough using the S&P futures we saw a near 30 point swing to the downside. In economic news, GDP came in much stronger than…

The Market’s all a TWTR

Index & Sector performance 11/4/13 The Market: A gap higher in the S&P was quickly sold down to 11:30 am EST where the market found support and then rallied to the close making new highs for the day in the final few minutes. In economic data Factory orders came in lighter than expected and while there was some Fed speak, nothing too groundbreaking.  Tomorrow we see ISM and Economic Optimism.  Looming Thursday is the Unemployment Claims data which has a very low estimate and looks like a softball for the markets to beat.  A big miss with already low expectations…

All quiet before jobs data

Index & Sector performance 10/21/13 The Market: Not too much to report as it was a quiet down day in the S&P 500 and Dow with the Nasdaq making small gains much on the back of a strong performance from Apple (AAPL) closing up nearly 2.5% on the day. In economic news we had Existing Home Sales with came in light posting a 5.29M when 5.31M was expected.  Tomorrow will be a much bigger day as we get the jobs report that was delayed due to the government shutdown.  Current forecast is for 182K and Unemployment rate of 7.3% Story…

Market follows up gap with more gains

Index & Sector performance 9/17/13 The Market: The majority of today’s action was in the first half hour of trading when the S&P gaped slightly higher and then ran up seeing the majority of the days gains.  The remainder of the day the market was able to hold those gains and drift higher on what looked to be an overall light volume day. In economic news, Core CPI came in as expected while headline CPI  was actually less than expected with a 0.1% increase when 0.2% was expected.  Remember headline reflects food and energy while core strips it out.  Tomorrow…

Daily Wrap

DJIA -5.07 (-0.03%) to 14,968.89; S&P 500 +3.09 (+0.19%) to 1,617.51; NASDAQ +10.77 (+0.37%) to 2,955.36 Yawn, for the most part a boring day as the market essentially consolidated after Friday’s gap higher with the Dow closing slightly negative while the S&P 500 and Nasdaq slightly positive..  There was no major economic news for the day and frankly the week in general is relatively light.  Some fed speak and Unemployment Claims Thursday but relatively light.  To try and put into perspective the day, the entire range of the S&P 500 Index was roughly 5.5 points. Merger Monday was again back and in affect with BMC Software…
