Huge intraday rally as Volatility continues

The Market: It is not uncommon when the S&P is down 25+ points intraday for their to be a rally but to see the index trade down over 30 points and then finish the session slightly up is surprising.  Even with the recent volatility, we remain within a range from, roughly, 2130 to 2050 in the S&P.  We are interested to see if the Bulls can build on today’s move off the low and gap higher tomorrow.  If not, we would not rule out the S&P revisiting today’s lows in the short-term.  Expect the volatility to continue. Major Market Indices down near or over 2%!

The Market: We warned in last week’s update that we viewed the pattern in the market as one that warranted caution.  In the short term we view the market as very oversold and due for a bounce.  Ideally we would like to see a failed rally in the Futures overnight that results in a gap down in the cash index which provides an opportunity to get long in early trading.  It is also worth noting that the SPY closed right at the 200 day SMA & EMA which should act as support — even if only short term. Looking…

S&P 500 makes new closing highs

Index & Sector performance 8/20/14 The Market: A respectable session for the Dow (DIA) and S&P 500 (SPY) as the SPY finished at a new closing high and the DIA is not all that far off.  The NASDAQ (QQQ) managed to finish slightly up on the session and while not as strong as the DIA or SPY, the QQQ has been the clear leader on the year.  The Russell 2000 (IWM) continues to lag and was unable to finish the session higher like the other broad indices however the index did manage to rally well off the earlier lows. In…

Financial earnings remain focus for week

Index & Sector performance 7/14/14 The Market: All four major indices on the WSC Scoreboard finished equally higher in today’s action.  We continue to be most interested in the Russell 2000 (IWM) and the fact that the Small Caps are not enjoying as solid of a year as the other major indices.  We ultimately believe for further gains the small caps need to be involved. In individual sectors the WSC Scoreboard was led by Energy (XLE) which finished up 0.87%.  Also finishing higher on the WSC Scoreboard was the Financials (XLF) which saw Citigroup (C) beat earnings this morning and…

Choppy trading leaves the indices flat

Index & Sector performance 2/26/14 The Market: A choppy trading session to saw a sell off toward the open which ultimately was bought until midday when the S&P started to make its way back down toward and below the previous intraday lows.  Again buyers stepped in and were able to close the S&P 500 essentially flat on the day.     Companies scheduled to report earnings pre-market:     Analyst Comments:
