Lots of data yields flat finish

Index & Sector performance 7/30/14 The Market: Lots of Economic Data/announcements in today’s session but when the dust settled it was surprisingly a flat session with the NASDAQ (QQQ) and Russell 2000 (IWM) leading while the Dow (DIA) finished slightly lower and the S&P 500 (SPY) finished slightly higher. The leading sector on the WSC Scoreboard was Retail (XRT) finishing the day up 1% however Retail remains the only individual sector on the WSC Scoreboard that is down for the year.  The laggard was the Utilities (XLU) and decisively so finishing the day down 1.69%.  We remain interested in some…

Tech and HealthCare EPS lead

Index & Sector performance 7/23/14 The Market: Today the stand out index was the NASDAQ (QQQ) which finished 0.64% higher with a lot of help from Apple (AAPL) which finished the day up 2.61% after reporting EPS yesterday after the close.  The S&P 500 (SPY) and Russell 2000 (IWM) were relatively flat, while the Dow (DIA) was the clear laggard and the only index to finish down on the session.  Weighing on the Dow was Boeing (BA) and Caterpillar (CAT) which finished down 2.34% and 1.53% respectively. In individual sectors it was HealthCare (XLV) which shined helped immensely by Intuitive…

Early dip finds buyers

Index & Sector performance 6/26/14 The Market: Just before the open the major indices started spiking lower and continued through the bells until roughly 10 am ET before finding a bottom.  Then as if nothing happened the market spend the rest of the day climbing back toward even on the day with the S&P 500 (SPY) finishing slightly higher while the other major indices on the WSC Scoreboard finished slightly lower. Just like the broad indices, the individual sectors from the WSC Scoreboard were mixed but all hovering near flat on the day.  The Financials (XLF) and Consumer Staples (XLP)…

6 day win streak ends..new starts?

Index & Sector performance 4/23/14 The Market: Today’s session snapped a 6 day winning streak for the S&P 500 but the losses were small and maintained a very orderly structure throughout the day.  In after hours trading, the futures traded sharply higher helped by Apple’s (AAPL) earnings which beat EPS and revenue along with announcing a 7 for 1 stock split, increase in the buyback, and an 8% increase in the dividend. With tonight’s overnight action, the S&P 500 is now closing in on the all time highs .  Focus will continue to be on earnings especially with a very…

3 strong days higher

Index & Sector performance 4/1/14 The Market: Today’s early action targeted our highlighted region from last night’s update of $1875ES and then pulled back to support near $1870ES.  Later in the day the market made another rally toward and pressed through $1875ES and now resides above in the after hours session.  While we are starting to see some intraday negative divergences develop on the market which provide some caution to the recent strong 3 day rally, we fully expect the S&P 500 emini to challenge the highlighted resistance region of $1884-90ES in overnight or early morning trading.  From there we…

Russell leads Indices lower

Index & Sector performance 3/24/14 The Market: The Bull missed a great opportunity in our opinion when a late day rally stalled and failed to get above the 1856.50ES resistance and they even had the opportunity to close up on the day.  Now the 1852-56.50ES region should act as resistance and leaves the door open for an overnight drop toward 1840ES and then further 1827ES. In Economic Data we had Manufacturing PMI come in lighter than expected but the previous number was revised higher .  Tomorrow the market will be watching Consumer Confidence and New Home Sales.   Reporting EPS…

Low volume day follows the trend

Index & Sector performance 11/22/13 The Market: The market made solid gains trending higher all day to close over $1800 in the S&P 500.  If there was anything concerning about today’s rally, it was the volume which seemed very light but seeing a market move in the direction of the trend on low volume days is not uncommon. There was not much on the Economic data front today besides some fed speak but Thursday the 21st was big.  Unemployment Claims came in better than expected posting 10K below (323K vs 333K) expectations while the previous week was adjusted slightly higher…

Fed open to scale back causes pullback

Index & Sector performance 11/20/13 The Market: Initial optimism on better than expected economic data pre-market saw early selling as the S&P pulled off the highs of the day in the first hour of trading and then the market meandered waiting for the Fed minutes to be released.  After the 2pm EST announcement the market began selling off as the Fed showed they are prepared to scale back on the rate of asset purchases.  The S&P 500 was able to use late trading to close a few points off the lows of the day. In economic data, Core CPI came…

China fears helped send market lower

Index & Sector performance 10/23/13 The Market: Today was a gap own and meander day where the majority f the losses were seen in very early trading and the rest of the day was mostly choppy. News attributed the drop to tightening fears out of China which sent international markets lower but as we have discussed here the market seemed ripe for a pullback.  More lower.. In economic data there was not too much today with import prices coming in roughly as expected while the Home Price Index was well below expectations (0.3% vs 0.8%) .  Yesterday we had the…

Daily Wrap

DJIA +67.12 (+0.49%) to 13,779.33; S&P 500 +2.25 (+0.15%) to 1,494.81; NASDAQ +10.49 (+0.33%) to 3,153.67 All in all today was a nothing as we started around flat and stayed flat the majority of the day until we (again) rallied into the close after lunch.  After the close we had Apple Computers (AAPL) report earnings which slightly beat EPS estimates but slightly missed on revenues.  The futures dropped at the same time as AAPL reported and started to decline and now stand down about 7 points as I write. Apple (AAPL) clearly is driving discussion after the close and it…
