Back test of the 20 & down

Index & Sector performance 12/11/14 The Market: Strong optimism in early trading was attributed to better than expected Retail Sales numbers and Unemployment Claims along with the stabilization of oil but in midday trading, after the S&P 500 (SPY) had rallied back to re-test its 20 day SMA, oil started to slide and took the SPY with it.  While the table above shows the SPY up on the session, as it currently stands those gains have been entirely erased in the aftermarket. We will be watching the overnight session to see if the S&P can stabilize, reverse, or if it…

New Ebola scare helps market off highs

Index & Sector performance 10/23/14 The Market: The market was cruising along today until roughly 2pm ET when the market turned and then started quickly losing ground.  Traders pointed to news that a doctor who had treated Ebola patients was rushed to the hospital in New York City.  The sell off was not enough to give back all the days gains but we closed well off the intraday highs. Many sectors from the WSC Scoreboard participated in the rally with the biggest gainer the Industrials (XLI) finishing up over 2% helped greatly by Union Pacific Corporation (UNP) and 3M (MMM)…

S&P rejected @ 50 DSMA

Index & Sector performance 10/6/14 The Market: The markets start the session in positive territory but the S&P 500 (SPY) quickly ran into resistance at the 50 day SMA and spent the remainder of the day pulling back.  The laggard on the session was the Russell 2000 (IWM) which was the first to go negative on the session finishing down 0.86%  Today’s high in the SPY now becomes a key level to watch along with the 50 day SMA and downward sloping 20 day MA.  This could end up being a choppy trading week. In individual sectors, Transportation (IYT) was…

Early dip met with strong buying

Index & Sector performance 2/13/14 The Market: The markets began to dip overnight and into early morning trading.  Weaker than expected economic data didn’t help but just as the market officially opened the bottom was put in and the S&P 500 spent the remainder of the day rallying only taking a short midday break before continuing on to made the highs of the day near the close.   The following noteworthy companies are scheduled to report earnings before tomorrow’s open: ALE, BAM, COTY, CPB, DTE, H, IPG, IPGP, ITT, JMP, LECO, LPNT, MINI, POR, RRGB, SJM, SNI, TRW, VFC, VTR,…

DJIA +180.85 (+1.21%) to 15,176.08; S&P 500 +23.84 (+1.48%) to 1,636.36; NASDAQ +36.76 (+1.26%) to 2,962.90 An second retest of the 50 day Moving Average proved to be a spring board sending the S&P 500 screaming higher on the day and of the major indices only second to the Russell 2000.  Helping today’s cause was two positive data point in economic news.  First the retail sales rose 0.6% when consensus expectations were 0.4% and then initial Unemployment claims came in at 334K when I had 354K as the estimate or a 20K beat.  What I am watching now is the 20 day SMA…

Daily Wrap

DJIA +24.50 (+0.17%) to 14,700.80; S&P 500 +6.37 (+0.40%) to 1,585.16; NASDAQ +14.54 (+0.51%) to 2,848.66 The S&P 500 started with a small gap higher after a better than expected Unemployment claims number (339K vs 352K) which then waffled for the initial trading and then started to press higher.  After an intraday consolidation, the S&P 500 again until around 2:30 pm EST when the index started to fade and continued lower until roughly the end of the day.  While still closing higher, the S&P was roughly 7 points off the high. As we are in the thick of the earnings reports, each day…
